At my school, we team teach, so I only teach reading. That means the amount of running records I take, analyze, and file each week is double the self-contained teacher's load! I generally have my small group whisper read, the selected student reads a bit louder & I use the amazing app
You can click the above link to check it out online or search the app store for "Running Record Calculator" There is a free version and a paid, $1.99 version.
The main difference between the paid and free version is the ability to record the student's voice while they are reading and mark substitutions, omissions, repetitions, appeals for teacher help, and attempts to sound out a word. This can be a huge help when trying to find gaps in a student's reading ability.
This is what the app interface looks like during a recording. It has the running timer, the miscue buttons, as well as, self corrections, and error. When the student has finished the text you simply click done and are automatically directed to the analysis screen.
You simply enter the number of words in the text the student read, how many errors the student made, and the amount of self corrections they had. You get a final time, the WPM, accuracy rate, self correction rate, and error rate. I then transfer this information to my hard copy of the running record immediately! It saves me so much time, I used to set them aside & go back after school ended and do the calculations and file them. Using this app easily saves me 20-30 minutes of calculations & filing.
The app also provides a direct export to email feature to email to SPED teachers, parents, academic interventionists, speech teachers..ANYONE! You could even email the results to yourself if you prefer to keep your files & records digitally!
Thanks to The Teaching Trio for letting me link up with them today for Technology Thursday!
How do you make taking running records more efficient?
That is so nice that you can email the reports to yourself! Thank you so much for sharing :)

I really need to look in to this app! I love that you can record students reading. And it also seems like I could be more efficient time-wise. Thanks for sharing!
