Making Predictions

Teaching comprehension skills through read alouds and interactive activities are some of my favorite lessons every year.

I read aloud this cute little story called "Gilbert the Goldfish Wants a Pet" to my class. We talked about making predictions before reading by looking at the title and cover illustrations.

The kiddos love when the 'cat's' shadow shows up in the illustrations. They are all soooo certain that Gilbert's new pet is going to eat him!

Once we get to this page we pause and turn and talk about our prediction for the ending of the story.

We head back to our desks and glue in our prediction sheets.

Quick and easy!

Their predictions were too cute! Some of them even cited the illustrations as their clue for making their prediction. LOVE. Using the little emojis really got my kids excited and provided a relevant visual for them.

Once we finish our predictions, back to the rug! I finish reading the story and we find out that Gilbert's pet catFISH is friendly! YAY!

We then discuss how our predictions, right or wrong, help us comprehend a story. We even talk about pausing to make predictions when reading to self. I just love teaching reading skills and strategies!
