blogged about!
We're Going on a Leaf Hunt by Steve Metzger. I chose a book that is perfect for the
month of October without being all about Halloween.
I love decorating
& dressing up for Halloween but in firsties can get a bit off task and wild
when Halloween comes around! I like to use this book in beginning of October to
transition to the fall/leaf theme before going full on Halloween!
“We’re Going
on a Leaf Hunt” is modeled after the traditional “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt”
story. It is a great book to teach or review several concepts. I usually use
this book for several days at a time in my lessons.
Day 1:
Introduce the theme and read aloud the book. I like to have the students help
me read the repeated parts of the story.
Day 2: I
read aloud as my writing mentor text and point out the sound words. I like the
way the author has written them aside from the rest of the text.
It is a
great way to point out that the author/illustrator can use words in the picture!
I also touch
on how the author can help the reader ‘hear’ the story by using sound words. My
students enjoy adding these details into their writing pieces.
Day 3: I
have my students practice retelling the story. By October, I have taught students
how to retell a story I have read aloud and we have practiced. This story is so
fun for kids that they enjoy retelling the story using the little rhyme/beat
that comes naturally.
Day 4: You
guessed it! We go on an actual leaf hunt! I only teach reading, so once we find
a leaf we bring it back to the classroom & use our COLORFUL language to describe
it!

ReplyDeleteA passion for books and who value the hunt as well as the book's "pedigree", the bouquinistes will always be irreplaceable - so don't forget to drop by and keep one of Paris's oldest pieces of heritage alive.
ReplyDeleteThis book is one my son's favorite.
